Handy reference

I first got a glance at this book at a local developers meeting by the end of last year. As a veteran ASP developer of more than 10 years of hands-on experience, I found that the author has covered a broad spectrum of latest technologies and recent developments in ASP.NET. Although it's titled as a beginner's guide, I've been using it as a handy reference, whenever I need it during my daily work.

Indeed if you are a novice user of ASP.NET, this book would undoubtedly help you build a solid foundation and gain a deep understanding in this area. However, if you are like me -- an occasional reader -- this book serves perfectly when you need some quick and all-in-one reference (than googling around).

Clear, concise, fast read.

I was familiar with ASP (the OLD version - pre ".NET") before reading this book, and I found this an extremely fast, clear, and useful way of bridging the gap to the new language and programming framework. I was literally able to breeze through the book in just a few days. I suspect there might be a bit more ramp-up time involved for someone without a pre-existing computer programming background, but anyone who already knows their way around a web programming language should do very well with this material. I'm a very satisfied customer.

The book is a good introduction to asp.net, and explains the main concepts without going too deep and putting off the beginner. It will have to be supplemented by more advanced books to get the best out of the technology, but as a starting point it is pretty good. Book was delivered earlier than expected and in perfect condition.

I struggled to pass the Certified General Appraiser exam. This booklet gave me much insight into passing that exam. Although it was used (it had some scribbling in it), it was at a good price. If you know how much The Appraisal Institute charges for its textbooks you'll understand what I am talking about.

The title and subtitle say it all, as NPR essayist Macsai attempts in her first book to trace the milestones of female life, from junior high crushes to marriage and motherhood, in this collection of closely connected essays. Purportedly a celebration of "girlfriends"--odd as the moniker seems when applied to a mother of two, as the author is--the "girls" practically disappear as Macsai moves on to describe her forays into dating and marriage. Heterosexual in outlook, the sections on friendship cover familiar territory (girlfriends are practically perfect--they dish about men and clothes and eat ice cream with you, but you can't sleep with them). Macsai includes a supposedly "liberating" dating game you can play with your friends: assign a point value for various types of dates (lunch, dinner, meeting his parents, etc.) and see who wins. When the author meets her future husband, the reader is unprepared for what follows--a hackneyed account of the various ways her husband annoys her, summed up with the (unattributed) Elvis paraphrase: "I've never been quite sure which came first, the hotheaded woman or the oblivious man." Macsai's discussion of the age-old problem of how to balance children and the rest of life merely reinforces hidebound gender roles. Even worse, the humor of her outdated shtick often falls flat and her attempts to portray herself as hip ("I am a rhythm machine") don't ring true. This is The Rules couched in the language of talk-show, "you go, girl" feminism, unlikely to instruct or amuse. (Feb.)

Buy Lipshtick, read it (it'll take all of two days), write your name in the front cover and pass it through your circle of friends and hope that it eventually makes it back to you. Even if it doesn't make it back to your shelf, you will know that you've shared something really great. Pretty much any woman will find something to sympathize with and something to laugh at on every page. It's too bad the male "reader from NY, NY" didn't get it. I'd be interested to hear other men's responses.

I really enjoyed this book. The first 100 pages I spent getting used to Gwen's rhythms, the blitzkrieg of words, the hefty paragraphs, and new concepts (girl crushes. I was having a good time, thinking "this is good, this is clever," but not laughing out loud. Later on, I really grew to appreciate her style. The Dating Competition chapter was wonderful, especially the line with "...waiting for the idiots to kill one another or swim the wrong way like wayward sperm..." Still not laughing yet, but smiling. I laughed on Page 142. She imagines her parents and her boyfriend's parents in a Fiddler on the Roof matchmaking session ("a few hundred ducats and a blanket of goosedown" is what did it) and the fact that she doesn't mention 'Fiddler' makes it even more funny. When I got to The Beige Suit chapter, I wondered. How long is she going to rant about a beige suit? Eight pages? I impatiently flipped ahead to Hotheads, and the line "Who lit the fuse on your tampon." Big laugh. This whole chapter is inspired and hilarious. My workplace is full of women like this, so I can relate. The end of the book paints a nice and realistic picture of motherhood. I loved the image of her dancing to Elmo with her little ones. I really did enjoy the book, especially the later parts with marriage and babies. Oh, and I did go back and read The Beige Suit afterwards. It was pretty good after all. I want to give this to my sister for her next birthday - I know she'll love it.

Amazing

I adored this book. From the moment I picked it up I knew I was hooked. Never before have I read a book which offers better insight into being a woman and all the baggage that goes with it. I could not relate to most of the book, being only in high school, but all that I knew basically made me feel as though Ms. Macsai took my heart, opened it, and wrote a humorous, touching, and powerful book using my personal experience. Her style makes you feel so personally connected to her, almost as you were hearing each of these individual tales as one of her girlfriends. The majority of the time I was laughing or wishing I had one of my girlfriends here to enjoy her stunning book with me. The truth captured in Lipshtick was amazing, and deserves to be shared with all.

About the Author
Gary P. Jacobson, PhD, is Professor and Director of the Division of Audiology at the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Prior to this he was the Director of the Division of Audiology, and Adjunct Staff in the Department of Neurology for the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Michigan.

Neil T. Shepard, PhD, is Director of the Dizziness and Balance Disorders Program at Mayo Clinic Rochester and Professor of Audiology in the Mayo Clinical School of Medicine. He received his undergraduate and masters training in Electrical and Biomedical Engineering from University of Kentucky and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He completed his PhD in auditory electrophysiology and clinical audiology from the University of Iowa in 1979. He has specialized in clinical electrophysiology for both the auditory and vestibular systems. Activity over the last 27 years has concentrated on the clinical assessment and rehabilitation of balance disorder patients and clinical research endeavors related to both assessment and rehabilitation.

At least fix the typos for the 2nd ed.!

For $150, I expect a reference text to be meticulously proofread, and include excellent illustrations, including color pages in cases where it would be helpful to represent 3-dimensional objects. This text falls short all around. Before getting through chapter 1, I counted three typographical errors (carried over from the 1st edition). Most of the figures are outdated, 1 if not 2 decades old. Many were improperly enlarged from poor resolution originals, so they appear unattractively pixellated on the printed page. Not a single color page in this 900+ page textbook. Also, those 900 pages add up to 5 pounds, making the book a beast to handle. You need a very strong bookstand to prop it open just to read it, unless you want to lay it flat on a table and hunch over it. The content is great, and the authors' arduous work in compiling this information was not done justice by Plural Publishing, Inc.

Feminist interventions in psychoanalysis have often attempted either to subvert or re-frame the masculinist and phallocentric biases of Freud's psychoanalysis. This book investigates the nature of these interventions by comparing the status and treatment of women in two different psychoanalytic models: the Kleinian and the feminist models. It argues that, in fact, these interventions have historically tended to reinforce such biases by collapsing the distinction between the gendered minds of individuals and theories of gender.

This investigation is framed by two steps. First, in assessing the position of women and the feminine in psychoanalysis, The Gendered Unconscious explores not only the ways they are represented in theory, but also how these representations function in practice. Secondly, this book uses a framework of a comparative dialogue to highlight the assumptions and values that underpin the theory and clinical practice in the two psychoanalytic models. This comparative critique concludes with the counter-intuitive claim that contemporary Kleinian theory may, in practice, hold more radical possibilities for the interests of women than the practices derived from contemporary psychoanalytic gender theory.

This book is of significant interest to those studying the psychology of women, psychoanalytic studies, health psychology, sociology, gender studies and cultural studies. It will also be of interest to clinicians and candidates of professional psychotherapy and psychoanalytic training programmes.

As a member of NAPCA (National Automatic Pistol Collectors' Association) he continues to be involved in dialog with the pistol collecting community.

Jan C. Still has written the definative history to date, and in only 291 pages about the Lugers used by Germany from WW I to WW II under the collective title of " Third Reich Lugers. " Still's book is must reading for anyone who cares to learn about the Third Reich period in the life of one of the world's most outstanding guns in history. He covers not only the Pistolen-08',(Luger gun), but also all the known Luger accessories. This book is a must have, and a good read to boot.
