Excellent Textbook

I used this text in a translation class (French-English), and found it easy to teach with, and for the students to understand translation theory (e.�g. the seven translation processes, faux amis, etc.). The theory is based on Vinay & Darbelnet's Comparative Stylistics (1958). Each chapter covers one translation process, with numerous examples in both languages, and a series of application exercises. In my opinion, it is currently the best manual for an introductory translation course.

Very good textbook!

According to what I know from other books in translation studies, they remain scarce on details on the translation practice in the now and what to do exactly. Except this one. It seems that they understood this lack of nurturing and that they gathered the how-to's and that they properly assembled a series of chapters and sections that tell what to do regarding what a translator has to do in he now to accomplish his or her work.

Jones' book is a required reading for one of my translation courses at the University of Indianapolis. This is a 300-level French-English translation course that focuses on unraveling semantic and lexical hurdles/nuances in the inter-lingual translation process. My students love the book as it provides them with the nuts and bolts of literary translation theory and practice. Best technical book on photovoltaics

This book stands out for its hands-on approach, and in-depth treatment of all PV related topics: From manufacturing and underlying physics to applications, with economic analyses. The associated theoretical ideas are dealt with in detail, you can't finish reading a topic and be dissatisfied with what you get out of it. You come away with basic understanding, as well as the ability to design and start working with anything you read about. Remarkable.
In all, great book.. I've used it out of a library, but can't wait for a cheaper edition.

One of the few books in the field that spans the theoretical aspects of photovoltaic energy conversion through direct application and design of systems for remote village electrification. Expensive but if you are in the field of PV application or system design, it is worth it.

It might be a great book for beginners. And i think this is the aim of the book. I was specting something more deep on catalized finishes. But is ok, i still got to learn some new stuff with the book. Also missing color pictures. That is what really took me down. Especially for the price i paid.

Finally!

I am an American living in Canada. Its been difficult getting good finishing products shipped across the border ie say from Steward-McDonald and the like. This book provided lots of practical "how to(s)" using items available in local hardware outlets. It also turned out that my finishing project is similar to the "black strat" project outlined in the back of the book. I now have an economic and simple plan for making a glossy hard finish. I'm anxious to begin. I will tell you more when it is finished.

Very very disappointed with this book.

Save your money and go online and learn form the thousands of YouTube videos.

For a start this book is in black and white... I should say GREY and white... and very poorly reproduced at that. A travesty.
A book about guitars should be in hi-res colour let alone a book about painting and finishing.

It does have some good information about using spray cans etc but is way overpriced in my opinion.

Also if you are a BEGINNER don't buy this as the photos are simply not good enough for you to see what is going on. You need a clear guide and this isn't one!!!

Glorious Sugar Flowers

If you have any experience of gum paste flowers you will love this book. Excellent clear step by step colour pictures and good explanatory text. Glorious pictures of finished cakes and flower bouquets. Not for the beginner though as some of the techiniques are quite complex. Buy this book if you are looking for inspiration and a challenge .

This is a very lovely book. Full of great information for the more advanced decorator. It is a fine one to add to your permanent library, especially if you really enjoy making fondant/gumpaste flowers. She offers some of the more interesting and unusual flowers. She is from the U.K. so some of the flowers are not ones we get in the U.S.A. Most of these flowers require cutters, but she does include some that do not. There are good step by step directions, provided you do have some knowledge of this medium. The only flower that I can't find a cutter for here is the carnation and it looks as though it would be a great way to make it, too.
