But the most noteworthy aspect of this fourth edition is obviously its new material, which includes, for example, the new charitable form of charitable Incorporated Associations under the Charities Act 2011 and the related provisions. Also included are the amendments relating to Scotland and Northern Ireland. Note that Appendix J contains the update on annual filing requirements for charitable companies. There is an update of model articles of a company for use by property companies, as well as -- in case the need ever arises -- a procedure for the expulsion of a member.

For those doing additional research into this currently expanding field of law, the book provides extensive tables of cases, statutes, statutory instruments and European materials, plus ten appendices and a handy index. The text throughout (except for the appendices) is presented via numbered paragraphs for easier navigation.

Another time-saver is the accompanying CD ROM attached to the back cover. It’s entirely accurate to say that this book is an incredibly useful resource for all professional groups involved in this field.

Simply the best sport riding book available! As a riding coach/instructor I see allot of new riders. One of the first things I do is recommend this book. Those that read it perform signifigantly better than those that don't. While some may not understand the physics of riding, this book does a phenominal job of explaining it in a manner most can comprehend. Geared towards the track many might think it;s not for them. Need to Know Info If You Ride Bought my first street bike, a CBR929RR but couldn't get into a riding course early enough so I bought this book to get a head start. It 'over prepared' me for the riding course I took and when the intructor congratulated me for my perfect score I mentioned 'Twist of The Wrist'. This review is from: A Twist of the Wrist 2: The Basics of High-Performance Motorcycle Riding (Paperback) This book will teach you how to ride like Doohan instead of riding like a squid (eg fast and smooth instead of point and shoot). "A twist of the wrist 2" will teach you how to ride faster, smoother, safer, it could save your life and will teach you more about motorcycle riding technique than you thought you could ever know. This guy (Keith Code) taught Doug Chandler how to go faster. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. This volume teaches you cornering technique that applies to any situation. The main chapter headings are "throttle control", "rider input", "steering", "vision", "braking", "traction" and "racing". You will learn that smoothness equals speed and safety. Using the techniques taught by Keith you will find even a bike like my Yamaha Virago 1100 is a pretty quick bike through corners as long as you set up a smooth entry into the corner, then power through and blast o! ut the other side. I've blown away squids on GSXR750s and 1100s using this riding style, mainly because I can now carry a higher cornering speed. Keith teaches you that braking hard into a corner just upsets the suspension and maked the bike pogo all th way through. About the Author
Keith started riding in the dark ages of motorcycling, the 1950's. He first raced in the 60's at age 16, again in the 70's, 80's and 90's. He went to design school; was a photographer; designed and manufactured shoes for the stars; sold pretzels on the street; was a full on drug addict in the 60's; cleaned up with Dianetics; became a writer, inventor and dedicated himself to understanding and teaching the art of riding motorcycles. He was the first person to put words to roadracing and riding, and his research continues today. Keith lives in Glendale, California with his soul mate of 40 years, Judy. He has one son, Dylan.

Helped me survive some scary occurences

I don't know about everyone else, but when I read a book I learn from it. There is a lot to learn in this book. I am glad a I read it a few times already because I think what learned from it saved my skin the other day when I hit a large hole in a country road going about sixty or seventy in pretty good lean on a right hander. I think my forks bottomed out because they made this ugly noise and the bike started bucking like a horse ( I don't have steering damper ). I did what the book suggested in this instance: I didn't get scared ( until later ), I relaxed, I got out of the saddle, balanced on the pegs, and gassed it. Result: bike stayed up and I didn't eat it. Keith will tell you to trust your bike and let it do its thing, he says riders and their fears are the reason bikes go down and all you have to do is learn to be a good rider and let the bike do what it is designed to do. Excellent advice. This book might save your butt. BUY IT AND READ IT OVER AND OVER.

Corner fast, smile and say Damn! I did that well.

Keith Code and David Hough ("Proficient Motorcycling") have helped to demystify motorcycle behavior in turns. The concept of countersteering seems strange till you watch a bike coming directly at you and the wheel suddenly, (but temporarily) turns in the opposite direction of the subsequent turn. I've been a street rider (always having a fast/modified bike) since the late 60s and even with much experience, never realized how sloppy my riding really was. Mr. Code (in Twist II) points out that transferring the technical concepts to actual riding goes against many survival instincts. This is much like learning to ski where leaning downhill in turns is crucial to control when every instinct screams at you to do the opposite.

One of many concepts presented is "pivot steering by using outside peg pressure." The mechanics and application of this are well presented by Mr. Code, and I'll tell you the best part. It increased my confidence and average speed through fast corners by 10 mph! After some practice, this feels so right, it brings a smile to your face like any physical action in sport that you've performed well and gracefully. Lots of good stuff like this in twist II. You may think you can take turns pretty fast, and maybe you can but apply these concepts and you'll go faster and smoother.

An excellent book. I have been riding for 30 years but this book helped me improve my riding skills. I very much like that not only does it inform you of how you should be riding, but also why you should ride like that. By that I mean it explains what happens with the bike from various rider input.

About the Author
Scott Atran is a Director of Research at the Institut Jean Nicod at the Centre National de Recherche Scientifique (C.N.R.S.) in Paris. He is also Adjunct Professor of Anthropology, Psychology, and Natural Resources and the Environment at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. A respected cognitive anthropologist and psychologist, his publications include Fondement de l'histoire naturelle, Cognitive Foundations of Natural History: Towards an Anthropology of Science, and Folk Biology. He has done long-term fieldwork in the Middle East and has also written and experimented extensively on the ways scientists and ordinary people categorize and reason about nature. He currently directs an international, multidisciplinary project on the natural history of the Lowland Maya.

It's all in the mind!

A surge of interest in the evolutionary basis for religion has resulted in some fine works. Few, however, approach the careful analysis and depth of insight offered by Atran's excellent book. Asking the question, "Why do humans put so many resources into a counterintuitive supernatural world?", he responds that the answers fall easily into an evolutionary framework. He goes on to explain, in ten easy steps[!] how this circumstance has come about. The core of the presentation is what practices we follow are derived from normal, everyday behaviour traits. These traits are human cognitive ones, which makes their biological roots distant but traceable. The human mind, derived from the sudden expansion of cognitive abilities about fifty thousand years ago, put us in a unique position in the animal kingdom. Religion is the price we pay for being "special".

The "ten easy steps" are not. The astute reader may jump to the Conclusion for an outline of Atran's thesis. There he explains that religion is not an "entity", even though we publicly commit resources to it. Since it's not an entity, religion itself cannot be an evolutionary adaptation. However, it does fit into an "evolutionary landscape". That landscape he describes in a metaphor of hills and valleys, with certain behaviours following the path of least resistance. The supernatural, Atran contends, arises from a "cultural manipulation" of habits derived from the Pleistocene - fear of predators, death and the quest for nourishment. Since humans live in groups, the interactions of individuals within the group reinforces these habits. When natural phenomena are transformed into the supernatural conformity results. Once completing the outline, readers will find enlightening and reasoned arguments supporting the thesis that the foundations for religious behaviour have well-established roots.

Atran discusses the distinction between pathological and mystical mental states. While these are useful, his analysis of the sociobiological and "group selection" theses make truly compelling reading. Sociobiology has sought the roots of many human behaviour traits in the actions of other creatures. While that works for some behaviours, Atran sees no justification for applying it to religion. Religion is too human specific, he argues. Nor, he contends, does the notion that "group selection" - which claims religion is a "superorganism" - has any basis. He further dismisses the notion that "memes" - a form of replicable and transmitted idea, cannot account for the persistence of religious ideas. Memes, he finds, require a fidelity of transmission that isn't reflected in reality. Religion, being highly variable across many environments, isn't supportive of such rigid definition.

As a final topic, Atran addresses the dichotomy between religion and science. The underlying distinction between these two social forces is that science recognises that humans are incidental elements in the universe, while religion places them at the centre. Religion fares poorly in knowledge, while science lacks a strong moral element. It's a fitting conclusion to a book closely examining how science has addressed the phenomenon of human belief in the supernatural.

Although Atran's prose style is a bit stiff, the information he conveys is too significant and well thought out to make that objection important. His command of the sources is indicated in the bibliography and carefully shown as presented in the text. He acknowledges in his first note that Pascal Boyer's "Religion Explained" was published as this book was going to press. Any student of causes for human religion will need to carefully study both books. They are a major contributions in understanding why humans engage in such seemingly bizarre practices as religion. Thoughtful analysis of the origin of religious beliefs

There have been a slew of recent books by scientists on religion which fall basically into two camps. The first, exemplified by Sam Harris' "The End of Faith," are essentially attacks on the logical plausibility of the major religious belief systems. For those who have already realized that these sorts of beliefs are absurd, such works are entertaining but are a bit like preaching to the choir, if you'll excuse the metaphor. The second camp, exemplified by Pascal Boyer's "Religion Explained," are attempts at explaining WHY people believe in such absurdities, from the perspectives of cognitive neuropsychology and anthropology. Atran's book is in the latter camp, and in fact overlaps to some extent with Boyer's book, published at about the same time, although each author has unique insights. I especially liked Atran's analysis of the origin of beliefs in the supernatural as stemming from a cognitive module predisposed to interpret environmental stimuli as coming from a potential predator, and I also found his analysis of "meme theory" to be enlightening (he strongly discounts it). Atran's book is the harder to read of the two and is largely missing the dry sense of humor in Boyer's book, which is why I docked it one star. I also disagree with the pessimism in Atran's last chapter about why religions are likely to endure indefinitely; I believe the secular trends present especially since Darwin must ultimately prevail. But his book is certainly a valuable contribution to the discussion of the origins of religious thought and behavior, which is of paramount importance in understanding today's world of religious fanaticism.

NOT FOR THE THEOLOGICALLY SENSITIVE!

Atran describes religion as

(1) a community's costly and hard-to-fake commitment (2) to a counterfactual and counterintuitive world of supernatural agents (3) who master people's existential anxieties, such as death and deception.

Later in the book he adds that 1, 2, & 3: (4) demand ritualistic & rhythmic co-ordination of 1, 2, & 3 such as "communion."

He later describes religion (paraphrased by me) as a thought process which involves exaggerated use of everyday cognitive processes to produce unreal worlds that easily attract attention, are readily memorable, and are subject to cultural transmission, selection and survival.

THEN, HE ASKS, "HOW IN PRINCIPLE, DOES THIS VIEW DISTINGUISH
MICKEY MOUSE OR FANTASY FROM BELIEFS ONE IS WILLING TO DIE FOR?"

While sprinkled with interesting and provocative comments, Atran tries to show that cognitive modules exist, thanks to natural selection. The tendency to invent supernatural agency is an evolutionary by-product, trip-wired by predator-detection schema...people interactively manipulate the universal cognitive susceptibility. Add a few hopeful solutions to the problems involving the tragedies of life and death, and you get religion.

Alternate theories of religion's ability to sprout and fluorish wherever humans have lived for any length of time are discussed and rejected. These include "memes" for religion, "group selection" for religion, cultural entrees, and others.

While myriad types of gods have been invented, Atran maintains they all end up as described in the 1st few lines of this review. He offers an analogy of mountain ridges and their many precipitation routes, ending in always the same few major waterways. In the middle of the book is a photo section of various religious relics, including a photo of the "Nunbun." This cinnamon bun became famous, and really does look like Mother Theresa!

He ends with the thought (and I concur) that religion will always be with us because there is no other system that gives humanity solace from the tragedies that beset daily life...with some brands even promising the bonus of an afterlife - only, of course, if you follow the prescribed tenets.

This is the first book I have ever read that espoused such openly irreligious ideas. I thoroughly enjoyed reading someone else's formulated ideas, which were so close my own unformed thoughts. I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!

Disadvantage: As excellent as this book is, I would have enjoyed it more had Atran made an effort to make it more readable and less technical. It reads as if parts may have been intended for his learned peers rather than the general public.

I Know It's Only Rock 'n Roll But I Like It!

Ken Regan has been photographing rock celebs since the early 1960s. In the intervening 50 years, the list of musicians he's snapped reads like a who's who of the industry: Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee, Elvis, the Beatles, the Stones, Dylan, Jim Morrison, the Band, Arlo Guthrie, Johnny Cash, CSN&Y, the Eagles, James Taylor, Stevie Nicks, Springsteen, etc., etc. ALL ACCESS is Regan's chronicle of that long, strange photographic trip.

ALL ACCESS is a hefty piece of work, 288 pages featuring over 300 b&w and color pix reproduced on high-quality paper. The book is organized chronologically by decade:the 1960s, '70s, '80s, '90s and 2000s. The shots range from fairly straightforward group portraits to in-concert pix, goofing-off-before-the-show photos, at home candids and so on. The book favors the Stones and Dylan; not surprising since Regan did five tours with Mick & the Boys and one with Dylan. Regan's entertaining and insightful comments nicely compliment the pix.

Short and sweet: Regan's book is a hoot, an enjoyable, well-photographed time-tripping travelogue through the music industry. Just beware that it comes with a hefty $75.00 price tag. Recommended.

I found the compilation of Ken Regan's photos to be good but uneven.
Whereas some of the photographs were terrific and compelling, others were "ho hum".
WorthThose looking for alot of shots of THE ROLLING STONES and BOB DYLAN will not be disappointed.

Outstanding photography that could only be captured by someone so imbedded in the scene...

One of those books you'll come back to again and again. Intimate, funny, sexy, powerful...those moments Ken Regan could only capture as a proverbial fly-on-the-wall. Great to pour a glass of wine and just savor the images as well as the stories of a time that seems so far away now. Wonderful investment in a quality volume. Highly recommended.

Ready for part 3

As long as part three is priced $5 or less I'll purchase it. The book was good but up felt some parts were not needed. Parts were added to draw the book out. Book could have been finished in 3 parts. I wish there was a way to find out if a book has more than 2 series. I miss the days of stand alone books.

Dust to side chicks literally

Nova. Nova. Nova. She was adamant about side chicks not breaking up homes and if so they had to pay... with their lives! No matter who you were. She turned into a beast. Aoki was all about ruining homes since she'd been a victim of it and playing a dangerous game that damn near cost her mom's life. Skye became a mistress feeling like she had the upper hand. These chicks were all going crazy and let's not even talk about the men... I'm anxiously awaiting part 3.

As a business student I love the comprehensive finance and econ terms. The only problem that I have with the dictionary is that there are no hiragana or katakana pronunciations provided. Granted,you can always use this in conjunction with some kind of online dictionary to get an accurate pronunciation, but I feel that most Japanese language students expect pronunciation to be part of a "dictionary".

Also known as REMEMBERED DEATH, this 1943 Christie novel is not among the author's most memorable work, nor is it among her most celebrated--but it is a solid piece of work all the same, and one that shows Christie toying with a favorite theme: a curious death in the past arouses suspicion that erupts into the present tense. A year previously London beauty Rosemary Barton unexpectedly dropped dead at dinner in an exclusive London restaurant--and when cyanide was found in both her champagne glass and in her evening bag, her death is ruled a suicide. But with the passage of time her surviving husband becomes suspicious and determines to restage the dinner party with an eye toward uncovering the truth. The result is yet another death--and once more cyanide is in the champagne glass.
As in many of her novels, Christie carefully limits the field of suspects to those actually at the table, and it soon transpires that virtually every one present had a motive for Rosemary's murder--and would have a motive to kill again. Is it Rosemary's sister Iris, who inherited a fortune upon her older sister's death? Rosemary's illicit lover, whose career could be ruined by scandal? Or perhaps his wife, who might have killed to save her marriage? Or is there a darker criminal element at work?
Although this novel reached the screen with David Suchet playing Hercule Poriot, fans of Suchet's performances should not be misled: Poriot does not appear in this particular novel, and the detective of note is Col. Race, who pursues the killer through an emotional interest in Rosemary's sister Iris. And indeed, this is one of Christie's more romantically-laced tales, with the story hinging on the various romantic and sexual entanglements of the various characters. The writing is solid and unexpectedly moody for a Christie novel, and while a few hardcore Christie fans may be able to spot the killer before the book's conclusion, most readers will be taken considerably by surprise. A fun, enjoyable read.

A treat for Col. Race fans

Charming socialite Rosemary Barton had committed suicide during her birthday party. Or had she been murdered? She had been a bit depressed after a prolonged bout of the flu but Rosemary had everything to live for, she was young, rich, had both a devoted husband and a lover. And why choose a busy glamorous restaurant during a dinner party held in her honor? Over the next few months doubts began to surface over Rosemary's death, but if she had been murdered then who could have done it but a guest at her party - her husband, adoring younger sister, loyal secretary, friend, her lover or his unsuspecting wife? Then the second murder happened.....

This 1943 mystery (also published as REMEMBERED DEATH) is told from the points of view of starting with Iris, Rosemary's younger sister, shifting to the other members of the ill-fated dinner party. The detective called in here to solve the crime is the mysterious Col. Race.

As always with a Christie novel the clues are all fairly laid out for the reader to follow, the mystery is clever with some interesting twists and turns along the way.

This work is also sold under its original U.S. title, Remembered Death(original British Title - Sparkling Cyanide), a fact Christie fans find irritating as publishers have changed titles on a number of her popular books - this unnecessary practice has led to considerable confusion for readers. I'm reviewing the original U.S. title here, a 1964 7th printing Pocket Books paperback edition (first appearing in 1947) which sports the cool black, red, and school bus yellow cover, 214 pages.

I should also mention that some of these publishers have more recently begun editing, redacting, and even (unscrupulously) re-writing some of Christie's actual words which is why I much prefer the older editions. But the one I've cited as reviewing here is terrific if you can find it.

THE STORY: A young heiress of stunning appearance weds an older gentleman, a man blinded by love, who is thus unable to recognize his lovely bride's personal failings as a wife. She soon expands her illicit romantic activities with her enthusiastic, dynamic, and passionate paramours. But she doesn't get to engage in her concupiscent behavior for too long because, during an elaborate birthday supper sponsored by her generous husband at a high-end restaurant, she drops dead of cyanide poisoning. Even though the death is suspicious and likely suspects abound, the coroner ultimately rules the death a suicide, citing the decedent's depression subsequent to her having suffered from the flu.

After a year passes, the husband becomes convinced of two actualities:

1. His wife had been having love affairs behind his back.

2. She was murdered by someone at the dinner table.

These epiphanies were chiefly the result of anonymous letters which he began receiving, advising him directly of the latter thought and strongly implying the former. So the distraught husband calls in his lifelong friend and man-of-the-world, Colonel Race, to aid him in trapping the killer. Unfortunately this widower's meticulous plan, which involved a second celebratory dinner with all the same guests present as before and conducted at the same restaurant, gives rise to a second murder.

That last comment is not a spoiler as all this is revealed by the book's back cover teaser -- Christie wanted us to know all this up front. The resolution is quite clever and most readers will anticipate neither the murderer nor the method.

Christie devotees have previously encountered the fictional Colonel Race, formerly of Great Britain's MI-5 organization, a man who also paired up with the renowned Hercule Poirot in Cards on the Table (Hercule Poirot). Race's role is somewhat unique to Christie mysteries in that he functions as a (semi-private) "helper detective" to the primary investigator who in this case is Scotland Yard Inspector Kemp, (whom, it is further noted, had been mentored by the more well-known and now-retired Inspector Battle, ergo: Towards Zero (St. Martin's Minotaur Mysteries).) While it is true that even Hercule Poirot serves as a secondary detective to the Scotland Yard one most of the time, (as does Miss Marple, Tommy and Tuppence, etc.), the reader still knows that it will be Poirot, and not the Scotland Yard sleuth, who actually resolves the case. But here, Colonel Race's role is truly a supplemental and secondary one.

While this mystery is a pretty good read overall, it's not, from my view, Christie's best effort. But since she generated a total of over eighty mysteries, romance novels, and plays it's logical that not every work can rank among "the very best." Of British cozy murder mysteries in general, (all authors), this one easily falls within the top twenty percent because Christie was simply that skilled in the art.

This book was first published in 1945 by Dodd, Mead. For those who are just commencing to explore the plethora of Agatha Christie mysteries there are probably better starting points. I would recommend Agatha Christie's Mysterious Affair at Styles (Hercule Poirot Mysteries); Murder at the Vicarage: A Miss Marple Mystery (Agatha Christie Collection), or; By the Pricking of My Thumbs.

Highly recommended for all Christie fans and generally recommended for those who enjoy various authors of the cozy murder genre.
