After she was discarded and left to die on a garbage dump, a Swedish nurse miraculously rescued her. A few years later, Stephanie covered with boils and dirt, lice infected, worm ridden, and cross-eyed from malnutrition caught the attention of a childless American couple who visited the orphanage where she had been given shelter. Stephanie was so dead emotionally that she rejected compassionate love. However, the couple heard the Creator speak to their hearts: She is the one for you. The couple responded and adopted Stephanie. Stephanie Fast has been an internationally known public speaker who has impacted hundreds of thousands of lives with her compelling life story that began as an abandoned Korean War orphan. For the past few years she has focused her efforts on advocating for orphans around the globe. Such a great story of hope!

Stephanie Fast shares her story of being abandoned as a child, being found, and eventually being taken in under the wings of a family. She was brought into this world as part Korean and American, which wasn't accepted in the Korean culture her mother was a part of. She was called a terrible name, which meant something horrible. When her mom took her somewhere so she could travel to be with another family member, a series of devastating events happen while she is lost. She ends up in a place that others probably sometimes die at. She continues to tell her story of how she suffered even after life got better for her later.

This is an amazing story of survival, hope, and the start of a healing process I believe Stephanie went through. I liked how she shared this not just as her story but also in a way that tells how her story is so much like the stories of others who went through (and some are currently going through) the same type of thing that she went though as a orphan. I know that no two stories about surviving as an orphan are the same, but I learned from reading this book that they often go through some of the same life experiences and feel some type of emotional pain and have emotional scars later in life. The open letter from Stephanie at the end gave me some anticipation about hopefully reading her next book about how she lived after she survived the devastation she endured.

I believe this will be a great book for people that are currently orphans to read, to give them some hope. I also believe it will be a good book for people to read who are thinking about, are in the process of, and who have already adopted a child.

Prepare to be moved

Imagine. Imagine that everyone around you treats you differently from others. Imagine that they call you "tougee" and even though you don't understand what the word means, you know how it makes you feel. Imagine that you are abandoned by your family, left on a train...alone. Imagine that you have to make your way in the world and that nobody will help you. Imagine that you have to survive harsh winters, dig up, catch or steal food and make clothes out of straw for warmth. Now imagine that at the start of your journey you are only four years old.

In her new book She is Mine, author Stephanie Fast takes her readers on an emotional roller coaster as she describes in horrifying detail the trying ordeal she endured as a young girl struggling to survive in South Korea following the Korean War. The daughter of an American soldier and an unwed Korean mother, this nameless child is unwanted and unwelcomed not just by her family, but by everyone she meets.

As you read this account, you will not help but become emotionally involved in the story, turning page after page, praying for a good outcome, for someone to take notice. As a parent your heart will ache for this child, for the physical and emotional trauma she suffers and the innocence that is lost. You will shed tears of sorrow as you are reminded of the tender young age of the one suffering. You will want to hold onto your own children tightly and vow again to shield them from all the darkness of this world. As a human being you will be enraged at the countless abuses she endures by total strangers simply because she was born of the wrong parents. Through it all, your soul will give thanks as you see the hand of Providence in the rare kindnesses shown.

In many ways, this book would be at home on a shelf in the "Horror" section of a book store because it is truly a horror story. It is also a story of survival, of living, when it seems impossible. Perhaps, the most compelling (and the most horrifying thing) about it is that it is a true story. It really happened. It still happens today. Ms. Fast writes "At this moment, there are an estimated 143 million orphans throughout the world who have been abandoned or abused. All are crying out or a caring person to deliver them from the hands of their oppressors."

If you are not prepared to be moved... if you are not prepared to be shaken to the core with abundant emotion, do not read this book. However, if you are willing to open your mind to the plight of millions of children, then pick up this book. Sit down, open it, read it, weep, mourn and prepare to be changed as your mind is made aware not just of tragedy but also of hope that exists all around you..

A life-changing story that you must read

I read this entire book in one night because I simply could not put it down. Just an incredible story on so many levels. I don't think I could survive if left outside for a week, let alone as a young helpless child left alone to survive for years. God's hand is so apparent throughout this story, and I was greatly moved and greatly encouraged by Stephanie's transparency. May God bless this book and give us all a heart to reach out and help the helpless around the world.

Oramus shows that no matter which literary conventions Ballard applies in a given text (science fiction, speculative fiction, detective story, thriller, war novel, or any other), he charts the very same territory and remains throughout primarily interested in the reaction of the human mind to the post-World War II reality - which is the common denominator of his diverse obsessions. Second, she sheds light on the spiritual condition and social problems of contemporary Western civilization as seen by Ballard, its ever so inquisitive member. Her technique in approaching Ballard is that of textual analysis and a close readings of passages of his texts that best show his exuberant stylistics; sometimes she also points out his references to literary and cultural theories. As far as said theories are concerned, Oramus follows Ballard's own readings. He very often alludes to critical schools and makes his characters discuss fashionable notions and ideas. A Very Good Introduction to JGB

Having read the first edition of this monograph, I wish to recommend it as a good introduction to J.G. Ballard's oeuvre. I have been told that the text has been revised and improved, so it might deserve the fifth star; however, even its first edition was one of the best overall assessments of the British author's fiction - a second best after Gasiorek's book. It is the book I'd give to a student who wants to write a paper or a thesis on Ballard.

Poetic philosophy

How incredible it is to read a poet and philosopher from 60 B.C. writing on the philosophical derivation of the idea that atoms must exist, that they have some spin on them, and that there is conservation of matter in nature! These thoughts about "atomism" would have been lost except for the fact that Lucretius presented them in a very good Latin poem. Although credit is given to Leucippus and Democritus for starting the idea of atomism, Epicurius and Lucretius were strong exponents of these ideas. The poem utilizes common observations to illustrate that the world about us is simply a combination of atoms and void. This had strong implications not only for the demise of the Roman and Greek gods and goddesses but also for how humans should live in the real world, and how they largely create their own misery. Lucretius loves life, looks straightly at it, speaks strongly against the fear of death, and promotes a rational calm life in which friendship is very important. The poetry is wonderful and powerful in itself. Two quotes (I,62 and I, 140) in the early part of the poem speak clearly to the modern reader: "When before our eyes man's life lay groveling, prostrate, crushed to dust under the burden of Religion (which thrust its head from heaven, its horrible face glowering over mankind born to die) one man, a Greek, was the first mortal who dared oppose his eyes, the first to stand firm in defiance. This is a great and astonishing poem, powerfully translated by Anthony Esolen. Lucretius did not conceive of the idea that parts of atoms, i.e. electrons, might spread rapidly through the body, so his poem gets more labored in Book III where he deals with the relationship between the body, mind, soul, and spirit. However he did think the soul had to be made up of the very smallest atoms that could pass quickly to all parts of the body. If the modern reader substitutes "electrons" where he mentions "atoms" in reference to the soul, then Lucretius is not far off the mark. The book has a 21 page introduction and 49 pages of notes at the end to help the reader understand the place of this poem in the history of ideas. It should be required reading for biological scientists and physicians.

"On the Nature of Things" by Lucretius. A translation by Frank Copley of the famous Latin poem, written by Lucretius, who lived circa 95-50 B.C., setting forth the atomistic philosophy of Epicureus 340-270 B.C. The poem was lost with the collapse of the Roman empire and only came to light again in 1417 when a copy of a copy of a copy...was found in a German monastery by a discharged papal secretary--see "The Swerve".
Astoundingly, much of this poem is consistent with scientific models today---invisible and minute atoms forever moving in a void under internal and external forces, joining together in various ways to form the visible objects of the world. The atoms themselves were eternal but the bodies came to an end and the atoms recycled into other bodies so that the mass of the world remains constant. He got it wrong about the speed of " heat atoms" being faster than the speed of "light atoms", but by and large this is the atomic theory of Maxwell and Boltzmann and later physicists, without the math of course.
While not denying the existence of gods of various sorts,Lucretias' view was that the universe goes on without their aid or attention. The world as we know it was brought into being and maintained by natural forces and follows natural laws, not in any degree by divine intervention. Since the world is a conglomerate of atoms and void, it is impermanent and must someday inevitably be destroyed, including the soul upon death. Seeing things thusly, there is no room for the afterlife, no need for gods major or minor, no reason to despair of death, and certainly no reason to forgo the pleasures of this world for a reward in the afterlife. What we see in this life is all there is and we should enjoy it. Small wonder that this view was not welcomed by the Church of Rome upon discovery of the poem.
Although he was basically right on the atoms, Lucretias' labored and today laughable explanations of the causes of physical phenomena in terms of the different properties of "smooth" or " rough" atoms, of differences in "heat" and "light" atoms, the flows of air, etc. only serve to illustrate the fallacies of pure reason without an anchor to empirical observation. Ironically, his Epicurean view of the things that could be seen was altogether wrong--earth, water, air and ether being the basic components of which everything was constituted, the motion of heavenly bodies on circular currents of ether, the size of the sun, moon and stars being as they seemed (totally lacking the concept of perspective that a little knowledge of the available mathematics would have given). It clearly never occurred to the thinkers of his age to check any of these postulated causes by comparison with experiment. However, the speculation on biological evolution through many failures is not far from the modern theory.

Thought Provoking

I wondered if I would find this 2000 year old poem relevant to my 21st century life. It is. On The Nature of Things is almost a reference book of everyday subjects from pain, harmony, love, touch, taste and free will. It also goes on the broader subjects such as life, rain, atoms, religion, earth and the universe. The outline of the poem gives you a broad idea of what Lucretius is talking about, and the index lets you quickly find his thoughts on any given subject. I find that I pick up the book when I'm thinking about something, and I wonder what Lucretius has to say about it. I would suggest this book to any independant thinker.

A fantastic unique book

This book is really fantastic.

The reader has the pleasant sensation to go through the book like he is attending a course of the Author, step by step, with no rush, having really the time to understand every concept of what he is reading.

Even pathological images were handy for me, because i was given the tools to understand them.

The style of the book is very particular as well, because the method is to teach you to understand what you see, explaining accurately what happened to that patient so that you see that image on the mammogram. I think this method is absolutely brilliant.

Furthermore the book is full of high-quality images and the text is not redundant and tiring, but it is focused to allow you to understand the mammograms.

I think every breast radiologist should have this book!

Must-have reference

I just got back from the course taught by Dr. Tabar and it was phenomenal! If you can't attend his course, then you must have this book. It covers all the material in the course in a clear and concise manner using almost 1600 images. This would also be a great reference for pathologists and surgeons who perform breast surgery, and techs interested in why they do what they do would find this text a great resource. I will use it as an adjunct learning tool after attending the seminar - I would recommend that buyers of this text do the same. Find the time to go to the seminar and then get the book - and good luck in your practice!
