This book is a great addition to my disaster preparation materials.

I have lived in South Florida for 29 years. I lived through Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma in 2005. I wish I had read Surviving Doomsday before those events. Learning from experience is good but having a guide like this book sure makes disaster planning easier. The book is well thought out and practical. Some of the suggestions seem so common sense yet I had not thought of them. Duarte's detailed lists are now part of my check lists for future preparation. Many readers may have never experienced an extreme scenario requiring the disaster preparation described in this book. However, the proverbial ounce of prevention certainly makes sense in this day and age of terrorism, super storms and aging infrastructure. A disaster can take many forms. Incorporating as many of the book's suggestions as possible will make a difference in the subsequent survival phase of such a disaster.

This book is very thorough in its coverage of what to do in a "Worst Case Scenario." Mr. Duarte is very honest and objective about the difference between reading his book - or any book - and actually DOING SOMETHING! As a martial arts instructor who thinks about this type of thing on a regular basis, I believe Surviving Doomsday does a great job of taking everything into consideration - separating "maybe" from "probably from "definitely." Too often, martial arts and firearms experts, as well as experts in other fields, fall into the trap of believing - and unfortunately TEACHING - that what they're pedaling is "all you need." It's just not so. Duarte has done his research though, and in my opinion, hits the nail on the head about issues that are variable and others that are 100% definite in nature. He's not pedaling anything except survival, so there are no hidden agendas here. Just read the book - you'll see what I'm talking about....

Surviving Doomsday: A Guide for Surviving an Urban Disaster is a great manual for preparation in the event of a nautral disaster or even civil unrest. The author is thorough in his explanations in a variety of areas including first-aid and firearms. Having lived in Florida for over forty years, I experienced Hurricane Andrew first hand. Lovely and funny

This was so cute, fluffy, and funny it will give you cavities. I can officially add Puku Okuyama on my list of "read everything this author publishes". 65% of the volume is the main story and then it has three shorter stories. They are all adorable. My only complain is that I wish this was a little higher on the rating scale. Some smut would have been nice. But I always want smut :P

I got this for Kindle and read it on an iPad. Its transition from print to digital is not very good. Pages were reduced in size and resolution was low which I'm still trying to figure out why do the publishers do this. I would assume the Kindle was intuitive and will re-size larger images to fit smaller screens, but smaller images don't do well in larger screens. Graphics 101. But don't quote me on that. If not for the technical difficulties I'd give this 5 stars.

I love puku's books. Comical and sweeeeet. A little ear cleaning fetish. Made me giggle. This isn't a hard core or sex filled Yaoi. Its just a light love between boys. I look forward to more books from this artist. Also recommending. Rules of standing on tip toes. Super cute.

Cute and funny, but weird

I'll be honest, this one was pretty weird. The main characters talk about cleaning ears for most of the story. It was pretty dumb, but still fun to read. The characters start off chasing each other around campus, but end up dating? It made me laugh a lot, if nothing else. There are four couples that this book follows. There were no particularly sad or worrying moments in the main story; one of them, Behind the Lens, dealt with bullying. Other than that, they were all pretty lighthearted.

The artwork was nice. Very similar to what you see on the cover all throughout. Similar to the artist's other work too.

I really enjoyed reading this, even if the main story was so odd at first.

Gr 7-10–The tragic story of Sudan's Lost Boys and Lost Girs is told in simple language by two survivors. The authors explain that a civil war between Muslim Arabs in the north and Christian Africans in the south led to thousands of Sudanese being displaced from their homes. In 1987, when Dau was 13 and Akech was 6, war came to their village. Both traveled hundreds of miles to a UN refugee camp in Ethiopia. After a few years of safety, the refugees were forced to move again, back into Sudan and eventually to a new camp in Kenya. Through all those years, starvation, thirst, and disease plagued the Sudanese. Both Dau and Akech kept hope for the future by going to school and learning. Their story has a happy ending, with immigration to the United States and marriage. Teens who know little about Sudan and its problems will be drawn into this moving, inspirational story. More than just a memoir, it is a reflection on a lost lifestyle, with plenty of details about the beliefs and culture of the Dinka, the southern Sudanese people to which both Dau and Akech belong to. A small section of color photos show scenes from refugee camps and traditional villages as well as John and Martha on their wedding day and with their children. Lost Children of Sudan

John and Martha, as children growing up in Sudan in the 1980s, both find themselves caught in the midst of a growing civil war. Both are forced to flee their homes, and travel hundreds of miles on foot, suffering thirst, hunger, and sickness, in order to find safety in Ethiopia. But their refuge proves only temporary, when a new government takes charge of Ethiopia, the refugees are violently forced back into Sudan, where war still rages. Both John and Martha find the courage and hope to survive despite their awful circumstances. And both John and Martha survive to build better lives for themselves.

The book does describe many violent acts, including deaths involving animals and warfare, but they are not graphically portrayed. If you decide to use the book in a classroom, you'll want to pre-read to make sure the material is appropriate for your students. The story is a powerful one, about survival, hope, and the difference that one person or group of people can make.

Initially, this book was purchased for a school assignment for a family memeber. However, I found myself simply captivated as it gave me some insight on the variables that contribute to the civil unrest and injustices in Sudan. Also, the heroic bravery and determination of John and Mary in their pursuit of freedom and reconnecting with their families.

About the Author
Samuel Walker is Professor Emeritus of Criminal Justice at the University of Nebraska, Omaha, where he taught for 31 years before retiring in 2005. He is the author of 13 books on policing, criminal justice history and policy, and civil liberties. His current research involves police accountability, focusing primarily on citizen oversight of the police and police Early Intervention Systems (EIS) systems.
