Then, just as Hera (2011) was really the story of Hercules, this book is really the story of Persephone. In O’Connor’s depiction, she could well be the world’s first goth girl as she rebels against her overly protective mother, Demeter, and embraces her dark side, black eyeshadow and all. George O’Connor is an author, illustrator and cartoonist. See the underworld in a new light

This particular book starts off its tale by telling us what it's like when we die--how we meet Hermes who guides us, the need for a coin to pass down the river, the river Lethe where we forget everything, and the waiting...the endless waiting. But the main focus of the book is to tell us about the abduction of Persephone, also known as Kore, by the Lord of the Dead, Hades. And the tale of her mother, Demeter, searching for Kore in the world above and the damages it causes on the Earth as long as they are separated.

And what a tale it is. I've always been fascinated by Greek and Romany mythology and I love how O'Connor puts this book together. It's an easy read, but gives so much information to it and is so much better than the boring old books I remember reading about Greek myths. O'Connor makes the world come to life and gives personality to the gods that we meet so that we can understand why they did what they did. In every other tale Hades comes off as a villain, but here we see he really isn't. He's just lonely. This is an excellent book to introduce Greek mythology and now I really want to read the other books in the series as well.

One of my favorite parts of the book is actually at the end, the little feature at the back that talks about the different characters, who they are, and other details to help you learn more about the Greek world. Even better, from a librarian perspective, they have a bibliography! A list of websites and recommended reading list to go to get more information.

I really like the artwork in this book. It has such great use of color and shadow in the depictions of the world, especially the underworld. Instead of depicting it all flames and fire (which seems to be something some artists like these days) it's more of a darker, almost hopeless place...much like it's described as in the original myths. It might be a bit creepy for really young readers, but middle schoolers and above will enjoy it. I enjoyed most of the character design, although at times it looks like Hades has a goatee (I think it would actually fit him well) and he looks a bit...well too much like an emo kid. I mean I know he's depressed and all, but...I do like the depiction of the other characters, I especially like the depiction of the many handed ones, the Hekatonchieres.

This is the perfect companion for people that have been enjoying the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan and want to know more about the Greek/Roman gods and how they work. It would be ok for elementary school age (3rd and above) but they would probably need to read it with a parent. But this would be an excellent book for a middle or high schooler (or even adult) that wants to learn more about the world of Greek mythology. I can't wait to read the previous volumes and to read what comes next

The most misunderstood God.

Hades is naturally viewed as the villain by many people (Whether it's because he's "Lord of the Dead" or from that animated movie Hercules, which is very funny and heartfelt, but it gets the Greek Gods wrong on so many levels) but George's book perfectly illustrates that he's actually not the bad guy. Great story and great artwork. I was very pleased with the book and I'm definitely going to be looking out for more of George's work.

I loved, loved, LOVED this book!!

It was a very fun and quick read about the Greek Underworld and its geography, and its residents and deities (including Hades, of course). It also talked about the Abduction of Persephone. In this myth, he is always viewed as the villain...but truthfully, he isn't! He is really a nice guy! And Persephone sees that, eventually. I even added him to my favorite-Greek-gods list just recently :)

I liked the way the story was told, and I also really liked the pictures...I guess this is a graphic novel-type book. It's very cool!

Another thing I was super happy about was the appearances of my two favorite Greek gods: Hecate and Apollo! I also really liked Hermes in this book, especially the exchange between him and Hecate...totally hilarious!

This is book 4 in the series, but I unfortunately have not read the 3 previous ones (they were about Zeus, Athena, and Hera). But I of course, intend to read them soon :)

This book is perfect for those who love Greek mythology, like I do, or those who just want to know about Hades, Persephone, and the Underworld.

Powerful and un-biased

Researching the poor working conditions in third world countries, I thought this book would only give me the history of chocolate. Instead I discovered a comprehensive look at the abuses in the cocoa sector primarily in the Cote d'Ivoire. A combination of the developed countries demand for cheap chocolate, corrupt government, corrupt police and avaricious manufacturers, the true losers are the farmers and the "indentured" workers who produce my favorite food source. Carol Off presents an unbiased look at the world's favorite confection.

Exposing the dark and bitter side of a sweet industry

Chocolate is a wonderful product. It makes its consumer feel good and, at its most refined, is as capable of providing all the exquisite and subtle ranges of refinement and taste as fine wine. We associate chocolate with happiness, and yet all is not sweetness and light in the chocolate industry. With this book Canadian investigative journalist, Carol Off, digs beneath the surface of the industry's smiling public face to expose the exploitative side of the business, in particular with regard to the growers of cacao, who often struggle just to live so low are their incomes. First providing a brief history of chocolate, Off then examines the historical and current behaviours of the major chocolate industry companies as well as the government and politics of the major cacao producers. It is not a pretty story. Corruption, violence and exploitation (including some child slavery) at country level are rife (and appear always to have been) in the industry. The author uses Cote d'Ivoire, the world's number one cacao producer, as her main case study, and risks her safety to travel into its cacao and political heart. Everyone involved in the industry gets criticised by Off, but this is not a book that just targets big corporations for the misery of cacao producers (the argument always being that they should simply pay cacao farmers more); the situation is much too complex for that and Off makes that crystal clear. If anything, the book is most condemnatory of the corruption and brutality of regime's such as that of Cote d'Ivoire. How to improve the lot of the cacao farmer is a difficult question to answer. At its root must be honest and stable governments in the major cacao producing countries. After that there is the question of how much companies should pay for cacao. It may be that companies are forced to pay more soon because of an impending world cacao shortage, and those that argue that you must allow the market to operate freely may feel this strengthens their case. Then there are those who feel that big companies should act more philanthropically by paying more than they need to for cacao - i.e. Fair Trade, or by guaranteeing to purchase cacao from farmers who follow sustainable methods (i.e. Rainforest Alliance). It is not my place as a reviewer to answer these questions. However, Carol Off's book exposes in a stark manner that cacao farmers in countries like Cote d'Ivoire are not in a sustainable position and one way or another something needs to be done to rectify the situation. There is no simple solution, and probably a combination of stable government, higher prices and better education of farmers is required. Of course, the chocolate consumer is also part of the equation. We may complain about poorly paid cacao producers but we still buy chocolate, and most people don't like the prices of their products going up. To slightly distort a well known phrase - you can't have your chocolate and eat it. "Bitter Chocolate" is a thought provoking work, one that attempts to provide a balanced view of the darker side of the chocolate industry. It is highly recommended as an entry book on the subject

Interesting expose of the cruelty behind our favorite dessert

This book is half history, half passionate condemnation of "Big Chocolate." As a chocolaholic myself, it did make bitter reading. Apparently, the international chocolate industry is fueled by the cruel exploitation of child labor in Africa. These children are treated no better than slaves. Others who are complicit in the many sins of this industry include the Europeans and American companies who profit from it, the IMF and World Bank who impose impossible conditions on producer nations, the corrupt leaders and officials in the countries themselves who cynically exploit their own citizens and of course we, the consumers.
France comes in for particular condemnation for its behavior in Cote D'Ivoire.
I learned from this book that it has always been thus. Major companies like Cadbury and Rowntree were founded by Quakers devoted to the ideals of treating their employees well and did so -- in England. But they turned a blind eye to the horrible slave-like conditions of those who grew and picked the crop in Africa. Likewise, Milton Hershey was an enlightened though paternalistic employer in America -- but did not care about the poor Africans who actually produced his raw materials.
It's an interesting, though depressing book. It's well-researched and well-written but it can't be called real investigative reporting since it relies mostly on the fruits of others' labors and a bit too much on Canadian sources. It spreads its condemnation a little too wide as well on occasion. I sometimes felt the entire capitalist system was under assault. However, still very much worth reading.

I guess I'm weak. I still like chocolate occasionally. I guess I'll try to find "fair trade" and "organic" products in future.

It is not totally useless. However

This book is a collection of Android App sample code using Android Studio. At this time, i.e., early 2015, this book is one of the few books that use Android Studio as the development tool for the sample code. Most of the code, if not all, work. However, this book does not provide enough explanation about the material required for developers to learn how to develop android applications. Some examples, such as Chapter 14 Multi-Pane Layouts, only use the Android Studio template to generate the app and NOTHING MORE THAN that. That was a definitely turn off. I meant it--absolutely no more than the code generated by Android Studio. If you strongly need to follow a book to learn how to develop Android Applications based on Android Studio 1.0 in early 2015, you can purchase this book and follow the first couple of chapters to set up the environment and use the rest of the book as code examples. It is not totally useless. However, you may need to browse develper.android.com to find more resources online. You can find more working examples by purchasing "Beginning Android 4 Application Development" authored by Wei-Meng Lee and use Import Android Applications (Eclipse (ADT), or Gradle, etc.) option to open the examples.

In summary, this book is not totally useless. But for a beginner, only the first couple of chapters for setting up the Android Studio environment are good for you. There is extremely little to no explanation in this book.

A riveting legal thriller from start to finish!

An Illustrated Guide to Civil Procedure, Written by the literary titans Michael Allen and Michael Finch, captivate the reader from page 1 to I-6.

The book is a chilling narrative of institutionalized ageism, told from the perspective of both the Prosecution and the Defense. The writers weave a web if intrigue as they guide you through one of the most exciting and heart wrenching legal cases in American History - that of Otis Olman and his struggle as the downtrodden everyman against the sinister and omnipresent corporate entity known as Full Moon Sports.

There are many thought provoking and conscience wrangling questions for which the reader is to ponder, such as:

"If Tweedy had not made a Rule 50A motion at the close of all evidence, would he now be permitted to make a motion under Rule 50b?"

Questions like these are meant to make the reader think, to search his soul for the very essence of what the question is REALLY asking - should a faceless monolith of a corporation really be allowed to stomp on the dreams of a modern day Tom Joad, that of Otis Olman?

Not since Ken Keysey's "One Flew over The Cuckoo's Nest" has there ever been a cast of characters so lifelike, so well written, so real. Otis Olman is the McMurphy to Tweedy's Nurse Ratched. He's an ever present entity ready to strike down the hero.

To ruin the twist and turns of this novel would do it disservice. I feel that this book has all the makings of a literary classic - the character dept of Tolstoy's War and Peace, the gut wrenching twists and turns of Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath, and the ultimate in detail description of the legal slaughterhouse - the courtiser l'abattoir de pi�ce, if you please - reminiscent of Upton Sinclair's The Concrete Jungle.

Do yourself a favor and get this book. If not, a little piece of you may be Rule 11'd.

Want to know what a complaint looks like?

Civil procedure books and supplements tell what is and isn't supposed to go in a complaint or a motion or an answer. This one shows what a sample complaint might look like, or various motions, or an answer, or a discovery request. Just like one picture can be worth a thousand words, here one supplement with examples can be worth a dozen that talk about something they never show. The hypothetical case is not riveting, but neither is it helplessly silly. It provides an ample framework for showing the relationship between a client narrative and a resulting document. Made it much easier for me to visualize what my civ pro text was actually talking about in terms of the type of documents a civil lawyer is expected to produce. Not for everyone, but wonderful for anyone who has ever wondered what a complaint actually looks like. Form books will show you what the blank form can look like, but not what to put where on the form.

Don't look past this collection!

I've been following this writer for quite a while. Like Barker and King, Bevan draws you slowly into the terror by completely painting the picture before ripping it before your eyes. His development of the antagonist is always bone chillingly detailed. This man makes me read with the lights on again. Well, I guess you have to have a light on to read, but you get my point. A must buy for the zombie lover, and for people who just like traditional, well thought out, and brilliantly developed horror.

I had previously read some the author's writing on another web site, and enjoyed it thoroughly. When I heard that he was publishing a book with new stories, I ran to my computer and purchased it. I was not disappointed. Rather, I was ecstatic. This series of short stories is well worth the price paid. I only wish that it was available in a paper format, as well.

I highly recommend this book to any zombie fiction enthusiast. The stories are different than the usual mass produced zombie stories. So, if you like using your gray matter to read fun, frightening, and thrilling zombie books, then you should give this one a second look. You won't regret it.

A Good Addition to the Genre of Zombie Short Stories

I hadn't read any of Pete Bevan's stories before & approached them with some caution after reading the doting and over-zealous reviews below. However, after reading this volume of short stories I have to say to this book is a fine addition to the field of zombie short stories.

It is not easy for a new author to publish short stories but this is a well-produced & put together collection. The book itself is very well done with a good cover & very pleased over-sized layout. It's a good 180 pages long with 17 stories of varying lengths. The one thing that binds them all is the theme of the walking dead...

Bevan is at his best in his contemporary stories such as the opening piece Islands, which has strong echoes of the remade Dawn of the Dead. The author throws you immediately in a battle for survival as an isolated guy holding out on a roof. Other tales of note in the collection include the twisty Cadish & The Boy - both strong tales.

For me, his period piece The Isle of the Ungodly is one of the weaker stories & I didn't feel like I was hearing the authors real voice here, it was too contrived for me. However, this is easily balanced out by other standouts such as the curiously titled Leaving Liminality & Bevan's excellent Minister series of stories.

All in all, this is a very good first collection. The author is at his best when his writing is simple, direct & razor-sharp, over the foundation of a good story - of which there are many here. Sometimes I feel Bevan struggles to escape the shadow of other writers & one senses the strong influence of other authors in the work sometimes but this is natural for a newer writer as they find their own style & doesn't detract from the value of this stories.

The Ministry series is a fine achievement in its self & I'll watch with interest to see what Pete Bevan comes up with next. I am a great lover & supporter of short stories so it's nice to see a new author put out a first collection like this.

Hidden flaws

On first read-through, I was excited by this book. Enough so that I organized and taught a graduate seminar using it as a text. My experience with the book was less than fully satisfactory, I am sorry to say. The subject matter is important, and van der Vaart's pathway through the material is well conceived, but in the nitty-gritty details there are problems. The all-important Chapters 19-25, on asymptotics in metric spaces, suffers from wild differences in level of exposition, even within individual chapters. Some notations and concepts are left undefined. Most proofs are incomplete sketches, leaving many students confused and bewildered. It takes a lot of mathematical maturity to fully decode what van der Vaart has to say, with the result that his message is often missed or misunderstood. The supplementary notes that I felt required to write ballooned from an initial 10 pages to over 60, and I believe that other, more conscientious professors have written far more. I have no doubt that some of those "supplementary" collections of notes will see their way into print, as textbooks that ultimately do a far better job with this critical material.

Excellent textbook on asymptotics in statistics

This book covers asymptotics at a level suitable for graduate students in statistics and other disciplines such as economics. It does not really treat time-series issues, but apart from that its coverage is very impressive. It covers M-estimators, efficiency, quantile estimators, semiparametrics, and much more. The writing is remarkably lucid; proofs are succinct but very readable. One feature I particularly liked was a very readable introduction to empirical process theory, which would be a good place to start before tackling the van der Vaart and Wellner's more advanced book.

Excellent book, but leaves out many finer technical details.

It is a great book with excellent coverage of topics, but it does not fill in many crucial and important details - the kind of technical details which is exactly what you are looking for. If you are reading it thoroughly, after a stage you will wonder why the author has left so much unwritten and unclear. You may scratch your head on one single statement for a week or more and start feeling frustrated. One particular example is the treatment of M-estimators in Chapter 5.

But, nevertheless it is still worth reading every bit, because it provides extremely useful results and tools in almost all the areas, which it covers.
