About the Author

Karim Yaghmour is the founder and president of Opersys, a company providing expertise and courses on the use of open source and free software in embedded systems, and Kryptiva, a a provider of email security services. Being himself an active member of the open source and free software community, Karim has firmly established Opersys's services around the core values of knowledge sharing and technical quality promoted by this community. As part of his community involvement, Karim is the maintainer of the Linux Trace Toolkit and the author of a series of white-papers that led to the implementation of the Adeos nanokernel, which allows multiple operating systems to exist side-by-side.

Karim's quest for understanding how things work started at a veryyoung age when he took it upon himself to break open all the radiosand cassette players he could lay his hands on in order to "fix"them. Very early, he developed a keen interest in operating systeminternals and embedded systems. He now holds a B.Eng. and anM.A.Sc. from the Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal. While everyonewas hacking away at Linux, Karim even took a detour to write his owndistributed micro-kernel in order to get to the bottom of operatingsystem design and implementation. When not working on software, Karimindulges in his passion for history, philosophy, sociology, andhumanities in general. He's especially addicted to essays and novelsby Umberto Eco and Gerald Messadie.

Jonathan Masters works on the Linux kernel for Red Hat.

Gilad Ben-Yossef is the cofounder and CTO of Codefidence TD. and has been assisting OEMs make use of free and open source software in commercial products and services since 1998. He is also cofounder of Hamakor, an NPO devoted to the promotion of FOSS in Israel, and a founding organizer of "August Penguin," an Israeli community FOSS conference.

Gilad is a member of the Israeli chapter of Mensa, the Israeli Information Technology Association and the Israeli chapter of the Internet Society. He holds a B.A. in Computer Science from Tel-Aviv Jaffa Academic College.

When not trying to make FOSS software do something the authors never intended, Gilad likes to SCUBA dive, read science fiction and spend time with his wife Limor and his and two adorable girls, Almog and Yael.

Philippe Gerum is the founder and maintainer of the Adeos and Xenomai projects.

Very informative, not for beginners.

This book is not for novices. You will need to be familiar with embedded systems and Linux previous to reading it, but once the prerequisites are met, this book serves as a great resource.

Great source for working engineers

I've been an embedded software engineer for years, but I haven't done all the different parts of a project. There's always someone else who does the bootloader, or writes a particular class of driver. When a coworker loaded my his copy of Building Embedded Linux Systems, I jumped at the chance to learn some of those areas where my experience did not reach. Within a few days I ordered my own copy and I'm in the middle of reading it. This book has just the right balance of high-level organization information with low-level, how to do it, details. Excellent book.

Poorly edited and badly outdated

The fourth edition of Marketing Management exemplifies everything that could possibly be wrong with a textbook. Numerous inaccuracies, grammatical errors, and general disregard for current marketing and product trends run rampant throughout the text and its examples.

I work in web marketing for a living and used this textbook for a graduate level program. I was astounded that the text claimed to have been updated in 2011 as it contains countless examples of unsuccessful products, campaigns and companies that failed to materialize, lost money or market share, and in extreme cases have gone bankrupt since the book was first written. These poor examples are all listed as innovative ideas from industry leaders because the editors never bothered to remove them.

The editors' attempts to update the text simply include adding new case examples as one-paragraph interjections at each new publication, which is laughable considering that many of these examples (think Kodak and Blackberry) collapsed due to poor marketing and planning. Unfortunately, these updates only serve to make the book overly dense through case after case of partial, incomplete data that does little to translate to what constitutes success or failure in marketing. Charts that were obviously inserted at revision points were never updated and needed to be modified or replaced for the 2011 edit. Unfortunately, this did not happen and students who don't know better will suffer as a result.

Concepts in this book may have been valuable ten years ago but its poor editing and overly dense, outdated material does a poor job addressing the digital revolution as anything but a storm on the horizon. The marketing industry should discourage and professors and students from taking this text seriously until it is rewritten from the ground up.

Kent Mauresmo�grew up in�Los Angeles, California. He attended UCLA college and majored in Computer Information Systems and Business Marketing.�Kent worked as an Account Executive at an Investment Banking firm from 2006-2009. Bored with his career choice, in late 2009 he�went back to school�and took a crash course in Graphic Design and Computer Programming.�

In April 2010, he launched his first website at�Read2Learn.net�which encourages people to read books to learn new skills.�He tries to read at least one book per week. He used to be one of those people who would never pick up a book because he thought they were boring.�

This WordPress book is not what I expected. It was more. Very informative. Chock full of Pics, Bits & Tips.

While I am aware of most of what's in this book, my past knowledge of cPanel was made from a lot of trial and error moments that were spread out over several years.

This book mapped the process - from A-Z. BUY IT.

This book answered both of those questions, and about 90 other questions that I didn't even know I had.

This is the perfect book for website Bimbo's like me!
I wish they covered the topic of domain transfer a bit more (this is where I struggled most) I purchased a domain from name then tried to get hosting through Arvixie right after ... Didn't work out so well. LOL! I even tried go daddy and struggled . I really wish I got this book sooner, I wasted a lot of money just trying to set sites up and eventually giving them up. I feel so much more confident about starting a website ! So excited for the future ! Thank you !!'

Tudor O. Bompa, PhD, is recognized worldwide as the foremost expert on periodization training. He first developed the concept of ""periodization of strength"" in Romania in 1963, as he helped the Eastern Bloc countries rise to dominance in the athletic world. Since then, Bompa has used his system to train 11 Olympic Games and world championship medallists and elite athletes.

A full professor at York University in Toronto, Bompa has authored several important books on physical conditioning, including Serious Strength Training, Second Edition, Periodization Training for Sports, and Total Training for Young Champions as well as numerous articles on the subject. He has made presentations on periodization training in more than 30 countries. His publications, conferences, and ideas are highly regarded and enthusiastically sought out by many top professional athletes and training specialists. Bompa is married and lives in Sharon, Ontario.

This is by far the best book I have read thus far on the subject of setting up a long term training plan and how to adjust it according to adaptive response. The book is full of study references on everything from training ages to dominate energy systems in various sports. Every strength and conditioning professional had better have this in your library!!!!!

Excellent, but long winded and incomplete

Periodization is the secret to effective training. The human body adapts to whatever you're doing to it within about 4 months. If you want your gains to continue after 4 months of training, periodization is the key.

Bompa's title could be slightly improved to: Periodization: Science, Theory, and Methodology.... Bompa references ~1100 books and/or scientific articles to educate the reader. He clearly explains the resulting theory, and also provides many examples of periodization schemes that apply the science and theory. See my other reviews, I've read a number of scientific based books on training, and I took 17 pages of notes from Periodization. This book is rich with information.

My quest for Exercise Science knowledge actually began a year ago when I experienced a frustrating plateau. I overcame the plateau by stumbling across one of Bomba's periodization schedules (1232, 3434, 5456) in a kinesiology journal. Using this scheme (Bomba would call it a 3:1), I have experienced explosive gains, and I realized that periodization is the key to training. This book is a must read for any serious athlete or coach.

Why only 4 stars?
1. Bompa repeats the same concepts repeatedly and devotes too many pages to obvious coaching activities. This book could easily be shortened to 150 - 200 pages.
2. Any book in excess of 300 pages and titled "Periodization" should extensively cover all relevant training theories. Bompa almost completely neglects Block Periodization. The more advanced you get in your training, the more relevant Block Periodization becomes.
3. Bompa is unfortunately under-influenced by Eastern European training science, theory, and methods in general (hence only the brief mention of Block Periodization which is an Eastern European invention).

I've yet to find a book that elucidates Block Periodization to my satisfaction. Verkhoshanky lays out the principles of it in Supertraining, but much more detail would have been helpful.

In short: A must read on periodization, but unfortunately it won't be your only or last read on the subject.

Drawing helps

This was one of several drawing books I considered as support material for a beginning drawing class I was recently called on to teach at a local state university. So much of drawing becomes intuitive after several years, that a good text by another instructor can bring those second-nature drawing decisions to the surface for both self-examination, and instructive help for the student. Though there is another book being used for the class, I found the excellent mix of contemporary and old master drawings throughout this volume to be especially nice for examples to students, and the exercises clear and useful.

I had not realized how long ago this was published, but recognized some of the exercises from my own studies from a few years ago, not knowing they were from this particular book. How many ways can you teach drawing? There are many variations, but most revolve around leading the student to trust their eyes and draw what they really see, and there are many such encouraging exercises in "Experimental Drawing", as well as a variety of techniques for manipulating the drawing media and constructing interesting compositions. I would not consider this a complete drawing course by any means, but it offers a variety of possible explorations that greatly benefit the study of the foundation of art -- drawing.

Amazing book

I love the book. I am a professional artist and I want to explore more in experimental drawing. This is the book to have, it proposes lots of different exercises and challenges to improve your skills and try out new forms of expression. I would not suggest it for a beginner though.

There are loads of examples which illustrate the wide range of drawing techniques and uses. I think it is very helpful to students of drawing - both the young and the young in heart!
