About the Author
Brad is the Dean Emeritus of Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington. Prior to assuming the position as Dean in 1994, he served as the first Director of the Office of Environmental Education for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C. Brad also served as the Acting President of the National Environmental Education and Training Foundation in Washington, D.C., and as a Special Assistant to the EPA Administrator. Before moving to Washington, D.C., Dean Smith was a professor of political science and environmental studies for 15 years, and the executive director of an environmental education center and nature refuge for five years.

Eldon is an emeritus professor of biology at Delta College. He has over 30 years of teaching experience in biology, zoology, and environmental science. Eldon has been a Fulbright Exchange Teacher in Australia and Scotland, received the Bergstein Award for Teaching Excellence at Delta College, and participated in an Earthwatch Research Program in Costa Rica. In addition to the environmental science text, Eldon is co-author of the very successful CONCEPTS IN BIOLOGY general biology text with McGraw-Hill.

Excellent Text Book, Easy to understand.

I used this book for my Environmental Science class for college. The book is very well organized and I learned alot from it. It's not loaded with technical terms and was easy to understand. Very beneficial. Perfect for college or for someone who would like to learn more about the Earth, what we are doing to it and how we can protect it.

Well written and easy for students to relate to

I ordered this book for a college course I was taking. It has a ton of really interesting concepts and the authors strive to make the textbook both user friendly and informational. The way the book is written was also very easy to read and had stories that I could relate with to really drive the concepts home. I enjoyed this class so much that I convinced a friend to sign up for it too and sold my book to her the following quarter.

I'm glad that I only rented this book. It did arrive on time and looked brand new. There is no dictionary in it so if you need a better understanding of a word keep your computer on. And the glossary is pretty useless when trying to find some sections of the book. And if you have a heavy class load and enjoy reading ALOT then this book is for you. Because they crammed a whole bunch of information in it. Most chapters are 30 pages or better...with small type. I do have to admit that the photography in the book is nicely done.

Amazon Kudos to you....the book not so much.

Rigorous and terrific for a math-oriented parent/teacher

A bit about me...I am a big supporter of Singapore Math, which I have used to supplement the horrific math curriculum we have encountered in 4 public schools in our county (namely Math Investigations, Math Connections, and Everyday Math). After switching to homeschooling last year, we used Dolciani's text as part of K12's online homeschool program. We are very happy with it. It is FAR superior to anything my kids have had in a brick-and-mortar school (even in the gifted and talented programs they were in). Each lesson begins with a concise, easy-to-understand approach with great examples. However, the problems for the students increase in difficulty, and sometimes become excessively hard compared to the practice problems. I had to wonder how parents were handling this if they did not excel in math themselves??? Fortunately, the teachers' guide that K12 provides, helps overcome this problem. Other things we loved about this text are the real-life connections that are given before each unit that tell kids the applications and careers that utilize the information they are about to learn, from engineering to architecture, to carpentry, and banking! This gives kids a sense of purpose for their efforts. In conclusion, for math-oriented families that want their kids to gain a deep understanding of math concepts, this text is up their with Singapore Math. Thank you, Mary Dolciani!

Great math textbook

I homeschool my three children and found this book to be excellent. It was easy to understand. It isn't full of the pretty pictures and gimmacks that some math books have but the content was very thorough. It covered challenging concepts (I was learning some new things myself) but the concepts were clearly explained. It gave lots of problems to practice and apply the concepts. It also clearly showed the important concepts and formulas introduced in the lesson. Some of the ways I had been taught as a student were made simpler (ways to find the least common multiple and greatest common factor for example). I would highly recommend this math text book.

Get ready for junior high!

My son started using this book during 6th grade. We wanted him to keep up on his math concepts over the summer so we found it used online for a great price and in great shape. The book is perfect to help him keep up on his math this summer and not be brain dead when he starts jr. high. He's not thrilled but for parents it's great!

Tagore, the definitive master of poetic prose, demonstrates his sublime literary sensibilities yet again in this beautiful tale set in Bengal sometime in the late nineteenth / early twentieth centuries. Originally published in Bengali under the title of "Naukadubi" (which means boat-wreck), this novel tells the story of how the capsizing of a boat carrying a wedding party across the river Ganga in a storm changes the lives of the two main protagonists of the story for ever. Tagore's writing is superlative, especially in dealing with love, melancholy and exquisite descriptions of nature, and this novel brings forth those qualities vividly.

I read this book long back. But story stayed with me forever. A brilliant plot. Brilliant Style. Sheer excellence that's all I can say. Tagore's can express great beauty in real simplicity.

Set to a lilting bedtime beat, this rollicking rumpus of a tale ups the humor ante in a familiar scenario by substituting dinosaurs for children: "How does a dinosaur say good night when Papa comes in to turn off the light?" In a series of snappy lines, Yolen (Off We Go!, reviewed above; Queen's Own Fool, reviewed below) highlights a variety of postponement antics, some familiar (moping, sulking and demanding "one book more!"), some of a distinctly dinosaur variety--"Does a dinosaur slam his tail and pout? Does he throw his teddy bear all about?" Teague makes hay with the text, and as always his illustrations are a flurry of sly madcap inspiration. He chooses the winged Pteranodon (spelled out in ABC blocks on the bedroom floor) as the character who throws his teddy bear while flying about the room; for "Does he swing his neck from side to side" it's the snake-headed Apatosaurus who does the swinging. Under his sure direction, the sight gag never grows stale, and the sight of a T-Rex puckering up for a kiss, or an enormous Stegosaurus crammed into a tiny bed and daintily turning off the light switch with the tip of his tail, is sure to elicit giggles. As the endpapers reveal, there's a cast of 10 dinosaurs featured here, and sharp eyes will enjoy spotting their proper names tucked into each illustration. This rib-tickling bedtime fare packs plenty of appeal. Ages 2-up. (Apr.)

PreSchool-K-A rhyming, moral read-it-again tale. "How does a dinosaur say good night when Papa comes in to turn off the light?/Does a dinosaur slam his tail and pout?" Teague's wonderful rounded illustrations show 10 dinosaur species (all identified) as they settle down for the night in their human households. "Does a dinosaur stomp his feet on the floor/and shout: 'I want to hear one book more?'" After demonstrating a variety of bad bedtime behaviors, the reptiles are then shown to be model youngsters. "They give a big hug, then give one kiss more." While the message is a little obvious, it is impossible to resist Teague's endearing dinos.

Outstanding bedtime tale

How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight? entertains while also teaching good bedtime behavior. Combine children's fascination with dinosaurs and Mark Teague's irresisible, humorous illustrations and you have a sure hit with both child and parent.
The text is rhyming and fun to read aloud. The question is asked repeatedly, "do dinosaurs do this (bad behavior)" and then the answer is in the last few pages, "no, they don't do this (bad behavior), they do this (good behavior)." The illustrations serve to emphasize the behaviors partly due to the huge size of the dinosaurs. Each picture contains the name of the dinosaur also.
Along with a variety of dinosaurs, this book also features a variety of moms and dads which helps to give it a multicultural flavor.
For those children who enjoy the book for its dinosaur content, I also highly recommend "Ten Little Dinosaurs" by Pattie Schnetzler and "Sammy and the Dinosaurs" by Ian Whybrow.

Great Book!

This wonderful picture book, including ten tired dinosaurs from prize-winning writer Jane Yolen and best-selling illustrator Mark Teague celebrates the funny, endearing book that most children will love for many years. I thought this book was great! My 3 year old cousin comes over every so often to spend the night, but has trouble sleeping someplace else other than his home. When I saw this book there was no contemplating buying it, since Justin (my cousin) adores dinosaurs. The pictures are fantastic and the story line is excellent. This book works great when were trying to put him to sleep. The dinosaurs are a good influence in showing children that dinosaurs also give their loved ones hugs and kisses before going to bed, and may even cry a little or throw themselves on the bed. I think a lot of children can relate to this book, and find it enjoyable, and like my cousin, can not wait until we get to read the book. This humorous bedtime story I'm sure will be a hit for anyone who has younger children.

Jane Yolen has written a lovely bedtime story about the way little dinosaurs go to bed and say good night. Do they slam their tales and pout? Do they throw their teddy bears all about? No... they give kisses and hugs and whisper good night. This is a wonderful bedtime book, told in rhyme that will amuse and delight your pre-schoolers as they enjoy the familiar antics of going to bed. With large expressive illustrations and an easy rhyming pattern, children will be able to "help" you read this story in no time. This is the perfect book to share before tucking in and turning out the lights and a great addition to home libraries.
