Among Best Choices for Single Volume Confraternity Version Bible with Most of Its O.T. with Full N.T.
By Gerald Parker
The Confraternity Version (C.V.) of Bible took many years to complete. The New Testament thereof came into print, in 1941, long before much of the Old Testament appeared, the latter bit by bit in separate volumes, with single volume editions of the full Bible (including, of course, the deuterocanonical writings, which Protestants designate as "Apocrypha") in the intervening period rounding out the Old Testament (O.T.) with the balance in the Douay-Challoner Version for those books of the O.T. which the Confraternity Version project had not yet finalised. As the 1950s rolled by into the mid-1960s, increasingly more of a Confraternity-Douay Bible would include the books of the O.T. in the on-going Confraternity Version translation. (Of course, initially such Bibles had included Confraternity Version's long-completed 1941 N.T. with the O.T. entirely in the Douay-Challoner Version.)
The Confraternity Version, indeed, was completed, in 1969, when the full O.T. text of the C.V. at last appeared, a fact of which many Roman Catholic (R.C.) and other Christians are not aware. Alas, the far inferior New American Bible (N.A.B.) appeared the next year, in 1970 (rather confusingly, also under the auspices of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine), with the complete texts of both the N.A.B.'s O.T. and of its N.T. in editions that had them bound together, in a single volume. The appearance of the N.A.B. in complete 1970 form ensued so quickly upon the heels of completion of the C.V. in 1969 that the 1970 N.A.B. unjustly displaced the 1969 C.V. from favour, which resulted in the quick withdrawal of edtions of the full 1969 C.V. from the market. Because of this, very few editions (multi-volume or otherwise) and copies thereof of the C.V. with the full 1969 O.T. exist; a full Confraternity Version Bible (1969 text) has been available in the Philippines, but, not surprisingly, is exceedingly hard to obtain elsewhere.
Even after the 1969 C.V. Old Testament had been completed and, at last, could be available in a single volume for the O.T., publishers nonetheless went on marketing single-volume C.V. Bibles comprising both the New and the Old Testaments only in editions which continued to mingle much of its own Confraternity O.T. with some books remaining in the Douay-Challoner Version; perhaps this was to sell off stocks of Confraternity-Douay Bibles before finally issuing Bible editions including the entire O.T. and N.T. Confraternity texts, something that, regrettably, seems never to have happened on any large scale.
The Douay-Challoner O.T. was, nevertheless, a fine and faithful translation, albeit one based on other principles and exclusively upon the Clementine Latin Vulgate text (rather than on the texts in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek which the Confraternity text translated), with the fortunate result that any Bible having the two Testaments together with a mixed Confraternity-Douay O.T. still provided the reader with a fine and reliable Bible to use.
The best that most buyers can do who wish to have the great Confraternity Version Bible in a single volume, whether to obtain through the Amazon WWW sites or even otherwise (as of late 2008), is to obtain a mixed edition of the Confraternity ("Confraternity-Douay") Bible that includes its N.T. and as much of the Confraternity O.T. as he can find, with the balance of the O.T. in the Douay-Challoner Version, such as the edition for which the Amazon entry includes this user's review.
The Knox Bible (a 20th century translation, of high literary quality in its English style, by Ronald Knox, based on the Latin Vulgate with resort also to the Hebrew and Greek texts of, respectively, the O.T. and N.T.) remained in print, but it, also, began to in lose popularity; at any rate, Knox's translation was too often too paraphrastic to be any kind of rival either to the preceding Douay-Rheims-Challoner Version (from Latin) or to the C.V. (from Hebrew and Aramaic for the O.T., from primarily Latin for the N.T.). There consequently is a crying need all the more for a new printing or new edition of the full 1969 C.V., with its own entire O.T. included.
There are some inconvenient aspects of the Confraternity and Knox versions for users unfamiliar with them and with earlier Roman Catholic (R.C.) translations, e.g. the numbering of the Psalms (being that of the Latin Vulgate and Greek Septuagint), the use of Latinised forms of names rather than the forms that are more familiar in the Authorised ("King James") and other Protestant Bibles, and now in subsequent R.C. ones, too (e.g. Noe rather than Noah), the Latinised titles used for Old Testament books which in some cases differ significantly from what one is accustomed to encounter both in Protestant and in subsequent R.C. translations, and so forth, but the quality and accuracy of the C.V.'s translation so far surpass what one finds in other R.C. Bibles that one bears gladly with these traits of the C.V. (These matters were normalised in the text of the N.A.B.'s O.T. as moderately revised from the 1969 C.V.'s O.T., but, alas, with the truly dreadful 1970 N.A.B.'s N.T. harnassed to it.)
The fine old Douay-Rheims-Challoner Version (D.-R.-C.) Bible rightly is regaining favour after so many years of domination in Roman Catholic circles of the Jerusalem Bible (J.B.), and its moderate revision, the New Jerusalem Bible (N.J.B.), which are quite fine in many ways but certainly not superior either to the D.-R.-C. Version or to the C.V.; as for the N.A.B., it is truly a "sadsack" version of little worth compared to any of these others! Unfortunately, the great C.V. has yet to have the kind of reawakening to its own value which the D.-R.-C. Version, for its part, is enjoying. Traditionalist Roman Catholics, in particular, should use only the Douay-Rheims-Challoner, the Confraternity Version (including those "Confraternity-Douay" editions), and, perhaps, the Knox Version, and thus should avoid such atrocities as the New American Bible (in its original 1970 or later revised forms), if it is a Bible (or a portion thereof) produced specifically and solely under R.C. auspices for which they wish to opt, rather than one of the oecumenical Bibles that have been marketed (sometimes in "Catholic Editions" thereof) since the 1960s.
While the use of a form of the so-called Greek "Critical Text", which are inferior to the faithful variants of the Textus Receptus (T.R.), characterises even the C.V.'s 1941 New Testament (N.T.), to quite limited degree, the 1941 C.V. had a much more cautious approach to the variants available in surviving manuscript "families" of the Greek N.T. and in the "marginalia" of in the various Greek Critical Texts that depart from the Ecclesiastical Text found in the Textus Receptus and the Complutensian Polyglot; indeed, the 1941 N.T. of the C.V. was translated primarily from the Clementine Latin Vulgate, and to the extent that the 1941 C.V.'s N.T. made secondary resort to Greek at all, it seems to have relied upon a more moderate form of Critical Text than those Critical Texts which translators have used to prepare their N.T. translations (entirely, for better as well as for worse, from Greek) for inclusion in subsequent R.C. and Protestant English Bibles alike.
The Confraternity Version is a point of reference for careful study of the Holy Bible, and, unlike so many later English versions in more mundane (even downright ugly) English, the C.V. is well suited to reading aloud in liturgical and other public use. Other modern versions of the Holy Bible, R.C. or Protestant alike, with very few exceptions, simply are not on the level of the C.V., either in precision and faithfulness of rendering or in benefitting from a literary style worthy of the Bible. Any Amazon user who buys the C.V. (including the various "Confraternity-Douay" editions of it) will have one of the finest Bibles in dignified, modern, literary English ever published.

Saint Joseph Edition of the Holy Bible: Confraternity Version
By Temman
The Confraternity Bible (New Testament) is great, because it is a good translation of the old Vulgate, which follows conscientious the text. Many like the Douay Rheims, but the language used is so old and is nowadays grammatically not correct any more. Modern Bible translations are often too free translated.
