Poorly written and expensive for the money.
By Abraham
This book is poorly written and a bad value at just a few hundred pages that's in paperback. There are only 5 chapters but watch out for chapter 2. They cram ENORMOUS amount of definitions and knowledge in that one chapter. What's disappointing is how awkward the writing style and explanations are in this narrative. The author is constantly citing other sources(like I care) and it reads more like a graduate thesis than a professional work of an organization.
Also the price is outrageous. I thought I was getting a good thick hardcover book for the $58 price but it turns out that It was just a paperback? The ISTQB, from what I've been reading is not that hard an exam, and many people pass it by just looking at the syllabus? Speaking of which...the book starts of by quoting the syllabus and when I downloaded and printed that for free....I discovered that a lot of the free syllabus has the same information as this book!
This exam is also an outrageous amount of money at $250 and I'm not sure if the certification is worth it because most of the people in the industry don't even have it. One expert in the field that I saw on youtube, James Bach, constantly trashes the worth of the certification and states building your reputation is worth more in the industry.
I would think twice about purchasing this piece of work and perhaps look into getting the syllabus instead. This whole thing might be a rip-off even though 100K+ have gotten the cert. This book and their organization needs a makeover. Wait for another edition?

Disappointing as a study guide
By twoeyedcyclops
“Foundations of Software Testing” has been disappointing as both a study guide and as a preparation for the ISQTB Foundation level certification. I have problems with both the material in the book and the way it’s presented.

This book is primarily an explanation of the terms used in the ISTQB Foundation level syllabus, which seems focused on defining standardized software testing terminology, and while I appreciate that as a general goal, even if you master all the material in this book, I would guess that you’re still not going to know how to actually test software.

I also have a problem with some of the syllabus terms and definitions. For example, “functionality testing” is defined as “The process of testing to determine the functionality of a software product”. “Performance testing” is “The process of testing to determine the performance of a software product”. When I was taking vocabulary tests as a kid, I remember being told that you can’t define a word using the same word. Although they’re not all like this – I picked some of the worst ones – I don’t see how a beginning software tester would find some of these definitions to be useful.

Some parts of the syllabus just seem poorly thought out. For example, a test that is performed to see if a software fix worked or not, they call “confirmation testing”. The word “confirmation” makes it sound like you are confirming it works - you’re expecting it to work - and that’s the wrong attitude to take when testing. You have to expect fixes to fail, or at least keep an open mind. Similarly, one of the basic objectives of testing is defined as “Gaining confidence in the level of quality”. That means when testing you can only gain confidence, not lose it. Surely the goal should be more like “assessing the level of confidence in the quality of the software”.

To be fair, some parts of the syllabus are pretty good, for example, the seven principles of testing – which includes things like it’s important to start testing early in the project lifecycle and that not everything can be tested – are useful and worth remembering as basic principles. And it is good to have a working knowledge of the different development models and some of the other topics covered here.

I’ve been finding this book to be hard to use as a study guide. There seems to be a lot more words than it needs, and though it is fairly short, it would be more useful for me if the fluff was eliminated so that it was considerably shorter, and if the text corresponded more closely to the syllabus learning objectives. For example Section 2.3 is about Test Types. There are five separate learning objectives for Section 2.3, with 2.3.1 being “Compare four software test types (functional, non-functional, structural, and change related) by example”. But the text for 2.3.1 is solely about black box testing. Learning objective 2.3.5 (confirmation and regression testing) does not even have a corresponding section in the text, although that learning objective is covered by 2.3.4, which in the syllabus is supposed to be “identify and describe test types based on the analysis of a software system’s structure or architecture”. I can’t seem to find any text in the book about this specific learning objective. By the way, Section 2.3 isn’t the only section with these problems, this is just one example.

I also have to question why over 10 pages of this brief book are devoted to a lengthy explanation of the different phases of a formal review, plus the characteristics of walkthroughs, technical reviews, and inspections. Surely a page or two would have been enough. On the other hand, there is just one page for configuration management, which is described as “important” and “a topic that often perplexes new practitioners”, but is not clearly defined and dealt with only briefly and vaguely. I’ve read this section over and over and I still don’t know what it is.

Will this book help you pass the ISQTB Foundation certification test? I don’t know. After studying this material for a while, I decided not to take the test myself because it’s expensive and I’m not impressed with the quality of the material. I do think there’s some good stuff buried here, but I don’t see how getting this certification will help someone work as a software tester. I think ISTQB needs to take another pass at improving the Foundation level syllabus so that it’s more than just an overview of what you need to know for the other certification levels, and make it more focused on what testers actually do. Then I would like to see another edition of this book that fits the syllabus better and that is more concise and clear.

Written by Rex Black--nothing more needs to be said!
By Ernie Beckley
Need to pass the ITQSB Foundations exam? This is the book for you. I don't say this because the book helped me--it didn't. I purchased copies of this book for anyone on my testing team who wanted to get the certification. So far, two have taken the exam and both passed with scores above 80% (65% is passing). Four more are lined up to take the exam first quarter of next year. So far, so good.

Two other comments.

First, if you see "Rex Black" on a book, you know it's going to be good. If you are a software tester and never heard of Rex Black, shame on you. This man is a god among testers. I learned more from his books than anywhere else. You should read his stuff.

Second, when studying for the test and taking the exam, throw out EVERYTHING you know about testing. DO NOT try to reconcile what is in the book to what you do on the job. It will drive you insane and you will not do well on the test. Stick to the book and you'll be fine.
