Review
"This sweet and insightful story, beautifully illustrated and elegantly designed, conveys to children the important message that science and reason are the foundation of a humanist worldview, which includes respect for all living things and shows how morality can be grounded in rationality and even the scientific method. Storytelling with a rational message--what could be better?!"
--Michael Shermer, Publisher of Skeptic magazine, monthly columnist for Scientific American
"This beautifully illustrated children's book about humanism just glows in pictures and words. It gets to the essential question of how can we be good without a god. This story can provide humanist parents with much to discuss with their children."
--Carol Wintermute, Co-Dean of The Humanist Institute, a graduate level program in Humanist Studies
"The book touches on important secular concepts and helps children understand that we are all connected, that we can affect others both positively and negatively and that we can shape our lives with every choice we make."
--Deborah Mitchell, Author of Growing Up Godless: A Parent's Guide to Raising Kids Without Religion
"The book serves as a fantastic introduction to the humanist life stance."
--Jesse Bond, Director of Humanists Doing Good
"In this book aimed at grade-school children, a young humanist uses his understanding of evolution and the scientific method to arrive at a reason for "being good" - without invoking supernaturalism."
--Matt Young, coauthor, Why Evolution Works (And Creationism Fails)
"Simple stories that convey big ideas are the perfect thing for raising thoughtful and good children. This book is a great example of that truth."
--Andrew Copson, Chief Executive, British Humanist Association

It's not easy to teach the concept of right and wrong to ...
By Be-asia Mckerracher
It's not easy to teach the concept of right and wrong to children and, as secular parents we know this can present an even greater obstacle. The trick is to offer young people knowledge and time to experiment with what we know to be true. Iturrate's beautifully written "How.." does just that.
Instead of answering her son's question of "how should I live my life?" with a definitive "this is how..", the mother in this beautifully illustrated story replies "You get to decide."
This starts the son on a journey of self-discovery that secular parents can appreciate: one where children are in control and we are there to guide them.
Along with beautifully illustrated images, the narrator of this story (a little boy out on a short hike through the woods) decides that unleashing his inner "naughty" is the perfect choice for life--know any kiddos like that?
It's only at the end of the hike that he realizes the true consequences of his choices.
Michelle Iturrate's How: A Day in the Life of Secular Humanist is a great picture book for young readers. It opens the door for conversations between parents and children about the most fundamental aspects of secular living in a religious world. It also helps children answer questions like what do we believe? How are our beliefs different? And, how can I get ready to be a grown up?
This book belongs on the secular child's bookshelf :-)

Excellent children's book for inquisitive minds
By Anne
I love this book! This is a beautifully-told story that teaches children how powerful it is to think for themselves and how the scientific theory can be applied in our real lives. Children will relate to the main character; he is curious, imaginative, spontaneous, and compassionate. The way he arrives at realizing how our actions have consequences is a lesson I want my son to learn, too. I plan to read and re-read this with him frequently and use it as a springboard for conversations with him about this very subject. I also think the illustrations are lovely - lush and rich. This will be a staple in our library for years to come. Bravo!
